If you are a male adult and are struggling with having breasts, just remember you are not alone. Many menshutterstock_113343472 struggle with a medical condition known as gynaecomastia. This is something you are born with, that causes an enlargement of the breast tissues in males. It usually starts occurring during puberty, where you develop small breasts. If you want to get them reduced, you can do so with a breast reduction surgery. For all intents and purposes, it is very similar to a breast reduction surgery performed on women.

Gynecomastia

Gynaecomastia, or male breasts, is identified by a few different characteristics. This includes having localized fat only in the breast area, glandular tissue development, larger nipples, a combination of fat and excess glandular tissue, and these signs occurring in one or both breasts. It is also important to note that for pubertal gynecomastia, about 75 percent of cases will resolve on their own within a couple years, without needing breast reduction.

Breast Reduction Surgery

Often called gynaecomastia treatment, breast reduction surgery in males is done to remove the excessive tissue in the breasts and reduce their size. It is done by removing the excessive glandular tissue through a combination of excision and liposuction of the area. It is recommended for men who are having self esteem or confidence issues as a result of the size of their breasts, to get better body proportions, for better social confidence, and if the size of the breasts are causing psychological distress.

About the Procedure

There are different surgical methods used to perform a male breast reduction procedure. The method used depends on the surgeon and how much tissue needs to be removed. The options include surgical removal of the tissue (excision), liposuction, or a combination. These are routine procedures that only take a couple hours.

After the Procedure

In most cases, the incision and scars are minimal. This depends on what kind of fat or tissue was in the breasts. After the procedure, you will wear a compression garment around your bandages, which help keep down swelling. The most critical days are the first three after surgery, where you will be on bed rest for the most part. Your doctor will let you know when you can start gradually increasing activities. It usually takes around 4-6 weeks for a full recovery.

The male breast reduction procedure is routine, with minimal side effects. It can help you improve your confidence and make you feel better about your body.
