Can Cheek Augmentation Make me Look Younger?

As you get older many people notice that their cheeks lose the full and healthy appearance that they have when you are younger. This can leave you with cheeks that are flat and that sag, and an appearance which is aged. The right Sydney plastic surgeon can usually help you reverse this using dermal fillers or cheek implants, so that you gain a more youthful look and your cheeks are full and firmer.

How is Cheek Augmentation Performed?

Cheek augmentation can be performed in one of two ways. Dermal fillers may be injected into the targeted areas by the Sydney plastic surgeon that you have chosen or you can have solid cheek implants surgically placed using traditional plastic surgery techniques. Each of these methods have pros and cons which should be evaluated.

Dermal Fillers

When dermal fillers are used the volume is restored in your cheeks so that they plump back up because a substance is injected into the tissue. This eliminates sagging and can help your skin appear tighter over your cheekbones as a result. You will usually get a more youthful appearance within days or weeks after the dermal filler has been injected. It can take a little time for the injected substance to settle. This procedure is usually performed in the office, and a local anesthetic may be used if the area targeted is large or multiple injections are needed.

Dermal fillers for cheek augmentation include synthetic materials, bovine collagen, and even your own fat or other body tissues in some cases. These procedures are minimally invasive, they usually require little or no down time, they are normally less expensive than cheek implants, and they typically carry fewer risks than traditional plastic surgery techniques

Cheek Implants

Cheek implants are solid pieces which are surgically implanted in your face during plastic surgery. This normally involves incisions and usually takes place in an operating room in a hospital or surgery center using general anesthesia. This procedure can offer results which are more permanent than dermal fillers and future treatments may not be necessary. The Sydney plastic surgeon will discuss the required down time during your initial consultation but it can be significant when compared to the use of dermal fillers instead.

Cheek implants are typically more expensive than dermal fillers and this procedure does carry more risks and involves more discomfort after the plastic surgery. Over time the substance in the dermal filler used can break down or be absorbed so future injections will be needed. This is not the case with cheek implants. For many the benefits of this plastic surgery are not sufficient when there are products which can be injected in the office and which may last many months.

Which Cheek Augmentation Method is Right for Me?

Determining the right cheek augmentation method is a decision that you should make after you have consulted with at least one Sydney plastic surgeon. The best surgeon will evaluate your medical history, your current appearance and skin condition, your aesthetic goals, and even your budget and lifestyle before deciding which method of cheek augmentation will be right for you and your situation. Both procedures can help you look younger but one will always be a better choice than the other.
