Dr Steve Merten discusses what factors influence a successful outcome for nose surgery to ultimately help patients make a more informed decision about their care.

Sydney, NSW – Dr Steve Merten, a plastic surgeon in Sydney, performs a variety of plastic surgery procedures at Pure Aesthetics to address both cosmetic and reconstructive needs. One procedure in particular can correct both medical and aesthetic concerns: rhinoplasty. Dr Merten recently provided an in-depth look inside what the rhinoplasty surgical process entails, from the consultation to beyond the recovery period. To help patients understand what influences a successful rhinoplasty, Dr Merten authored a four-part blog series on his plastic surgery practice’s website.

In the first post, titled, “Addressing Function and Aesthetics of the Nose with Rhinoplasty,” he notes that people often express a variety of concerns relating to either the function or appearance of their nose. Patients interested in enhancing the aesthetics of their nose typically want to achieve better symmetry or a more attractive size or shape. On the other hand, function generally relates to breathing issues, such as a deviated septum or collapsed nostril, he says. Though many patients do achieve their rhinoplasty goals, Dr Merten expresses in his second post, “The Importance of Having Realistic Expectations for Rhinoplasty,” that patients should be realistic about the outcome of their surgery: “There are no guarantees with the final outcome of any plastic surgery procedure.”

To increase the likelihood of achieving the patient’s goals, Dr Merten tailors the surgery to each individual’s needs, which he discusses in his blog post, “Dr Merten’s Personalised Approach to Performing Rhinoplasty.” His goal is to create an overall balanced facial appearance: “My philosophy for rhinoplasty is that any obstructions or structural defects should be corrected, while the appearance of the nose should compliment the face and fit harmoniously with the rest of the facial features.”

Additionally, Dr Merten takes into account how the nasal structures may change over time. In his blog article titled, “Considering the Dynamic Nature of the Nose in a Rhinoplasty,” he says while it is impossible to predict the exact changes that may occur, he does his best to minimise the possibility of these changes affecting the nasal aesthetics or function. Should a problem occur in the future, he notes a revision rhinoplasty can typically be performed to correct any concerns.

Dr Merten encourages anyone interested in nose surgery or any other plastic surgery procedure to consult with a qualified plastic surgeon who holds the highest standards of safety and patient care. He recommends his patients fully understand the surgical process in order to make an informed decision about their treatment.
