Eyelid Lift (Blepharoplasty) Men

The plastic surgeons at Pure Aesthetics offer eyelid rejuvenation surgery, also known as blepharoplasty for men.

What is Blepharoplasty for Men?

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid lift, is a cosmetic surgery procedure aimed at enhancing the appearance of a man’s eyes. This surgery reduces loose skin, fatty bulges, and bags, and tightens the muscles around the eyes.

Why Men Should Consider Eyelid Lift Surgery?

Signs of aging around the eyes often become noticeable in men as early as their 30s. Factors such as genetics, sun exposure, and lifestyle choices all contribute to this aging process.

There are two types of eyelid lift surgeries which be performed together for total eye rejuvenation, or separately if there is only a single concern:

  • Upper Eyelid Surgery: This procedure addresses heavy upper lids and loose skin draping over the upper eyelashes. It also reduces bulging pockets of fat. In severe cases, progressive hooding of the skin can impair vision, making the surgery a medical necessity.
  • Lower Eyelid Surgery: This procedure targets protruding fat deposits and sagging skin under the eyes

Eyelid surgery can be combined with other facial procedures, such as a facelift or brow lift, to achieve more significant facial rejuvenation. During a consultation with Dr Robert Knight, our experienced facial plastic surgeon, we can discuss these options and help you achieve your desired results.

FAQ

How Can Blepharoplasty Benefit Men?

Blepharoplasty rejuvenates the eye area. The extent of improvement depends on whether you undergo upper, lower, or combined blepharoplasty. Benefits include:

  • Improved vision by removing overlying sagging skin
  • Enhanced appearance of the eye area.
  • Reduction in wrinkles around the eyes

The Consultation Process: What to Expect

Your first step in considering surgery is a consultation with Dr Robert Knight, which lasts about 45 minutes. During this time, you should openly discuss your goals and expectations. Remember, the aim is improvement, not perfection.

Dr Knight will ask questions about your current health, medications, allergies, and any past or current medical treatments. You will receive a thorough examination of your eyes and how they relate to your overall facial structure. Based on this, the best surgical options for you will be determined and discussed.

The recovery process and potential complications will also be covered. Feel free to ask any questions you might have during this time.

The Procedure: What Does It Involve?

In upper eyelid surgery:
An incision is made to remove loose skin and muscle. Excess deep fat is also removed. The incision is then closed with fine stitches.

In lower eyelid surgery:

  • transconjunctal
Transconjunctal Method: Used when excess fat is the sole issue. An incision is made on the inside of the lower eyelid, leaving no external scar.
  • open
Open Method: Used when there is both excess fat and skin. The incision is made along the lower eyelid lashes, and the muscle and skin are tightened. Excess skin and fat are removed, resulting in minimal scarring.

Will I need to be hospitalised for the procedure?

Upper eyelid surgery is typically a “day surgery” that takes about an hour. You can go home a few hours after the procedure. Lower eyelid lift may require an overnight hospital stay. All surgeries are performed in fully accredited facilities to ensure your safety.

Can Blepharoplasty be combined with any other procedures?

Yes, it is common to combine blepharoplasty with other procedures like a facelift or brow lift.

What is recovery like?

Advancements in anaesthesia have led to greater comfort for patients, with less pain and minimal postoperative sedation and nausea. The anaesthetists on our team are highly skilled and focused on keeping you comfortable.

Post-surgery, you may feel “woozy” as the anaesthetic wears off. Some soreness, swelling, or discomfort is normal. You may also feel tired, but this will pass quickly.

Immediately after surgery, you will be sitting up with cold packs on your eyes to reduce bruising and swelling. Fine stitches used for external incisions are removed about 5 days after surgery. If the trans-conjunctival approach is used, no stitches need to be removed.

Due to the swelling, your eyelids’ protective lubricating function may be compromised temporarily, so you will need to use eye ointment or drops regularly for a few weeks.

Results: What and When?

Bruising and swelling peak in the first three days and usually subside within seven to fourteen days. Scarring will fade gradually over time.

When Can Men Resume Day-to-Day Activities?

Most men feel ready to resume their normal routine within a week. However, it is important to follow all post-operative instructions until full healing has occurred.

What complications can arise from the procedure?

As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and complications. These include:

  • Infection
  • Bruising, bleeding, haematoma formation
  • Scarring
  • Anaesthetic problems, including Deep Vein thrombosis
  • Allergy
  • Pain

Risks and complications specific to Blepharoplasty include:

  • Excessive skin removal leading to exposure of cornea
  • Asymmetry of eyelids
  • Prolonged dryness, itchiness or watering of the eye
  • Temporary or permanent changes in vision

The potential risks and complications of the surgery will be discussed with you in detail at your preoperative consultations.

Will this procedure leave scars?

Dr Knight carefully places all incisions in areas that are naturally concealed by your eyelid structure. If the Transconjunctal Method is used for Lower Eyelid Surgery, no external scar will be left.

What else should Men consider before having this surgery?

Emotional stability and realistic expectations are crucial before undergoing any aesthetic surgery. Blepharoplasty can enhance your appearance; the rest is up to you.

Before deciding to proceed, consider your recovery plan. Will you need assistance? It’s also wise to understand how potential complications are handled so you are fully prepared.
