Frequently Asked Questions

We understand you may have questions when considering your MTF Surgery. Some common ones are answered here but please feel free to contact us to discuss anything in more detail.

Male to female chest surgery is performed in hospital, under general anaesthetic, and takes up to 2 hours, and you go home a few hours after the surgery. All surgeries are performed in fully accredited facilities ensuring your safety.

Initially, you may feel lightheaded and tired as the anesthesia wears off. Expect some soreness and swelling that will gradually subside. Drains are removed the next day, and a chest garment helps reduce swelling and support healing.

Most swelling resolves within the first 2-3 weeks, with complete resolution by 3 months. After 8 weeks, a scar management cream is recommended to help minimise scarring.

Most patients resume light activities within one week. However, strenuous activities and sports should be avoided for 4-6 weeks. Light walking is permitted as comfortable.

Potential risks include:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Scarring
  • Nipple sensation changes
  • Anesthesia-related issues

Scarring is inevitable, but techniques are used to minimise their appearance. Dr Merten aims to utilise natural contours and nipple lines to reduce visible scarring.

Out-of-pocket expenses typically start at $10,800. Patients may be eligible for health insurance and Medicare rebates. A personalised consultation is recommended for an exact quote.
